After a bountiful harvest of fresh chillies this year, I set out to perfect my homemade sweet chilli sauce recipe. Sweet chilli sauce is one of the most versatile condiments in the kitchen—whether you're adding it to wraps, sandwiches, or using it as a flavorful dip. This mildly spiced, delicious sauce enhances everything from snacks to full meals.
After experimenting with several batches, I’ve finally created a sweet chilli sauce that strikes the perfect balance of sweetness and spice. Here’s my easy recipe for a mild and tasty sweet chilli sauce that will become a staple at your dinner table.
Ingredients:
1 x diced onion
1 x clove of garlic
1/2 cup of sugar
1 x pinch of salt
1/4 cup of vinegar
1 tablespoon of chilli - a fresh mild chilli such as bird's eye chilli or jalapeno work best
3 cups of water
2 to 3 tablespoons of corn starch
How To bring it all together:
Step 1:
In a food processer blend together the onion, garlic, salt, vinegar, chillies and 2 and a half cups of water. Blend thoroughly and make sure there are no large pieces or chunks.
Step 2:
Pour your blended mix into a sauce pan, add the sugar, and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally.
Step 3:
Once it has begun to boil, turn down the temperature so that the contents are simmering and leave to simmer for 10 minutes - stirring occasionally to make sure your sauce is not burning.
Step 4:
Mix half a cup of water and your corn starch together, and gradually pour into your simmering sauce pan, bring the heat up a little. Stir the mixture continuously as it begins to thicken into a custard consistency.
Step 5:
Once the sauce is at a thick consistency, while it is still hot, pour into a sterilized, warm glass bottle and put on the lid. Leave to cool to room temperature. The sauce will thicken a little more as it cools.
Once cool, you can place your jar of sauce in the fridge and use as needed.
